Is Patriotism bad? Why I can't Apologize for American Values

Is it shameful to be proud of your country? What does patriotism really mean? It seems to depend on who you ask. There appears to be some societal pressure that we be ashamed of our country's past and atone for the past sins of others. Cancel culture is toxic, and we do not cancel our country based on the actions of the few.

Before we discuss patriotism, let's talk about something a little less controversial. Let's talk about Superheroes. My favorite superhero was always Superman. He was so powerful, yet unwavering in his goodness and morality. He could have been anything. He could have dominated the world but he was great because he chose to be good. He chose to fight for truth, justice, and the American Way. What is the American Way? It is the adherence to the principles of life liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is centered around the concept of the American Dream, that success is achievable through hard work.

Wonder Woman is also among my list of favorites. She stands for goodness, truth, justice, and equality for all. She's compassionate and fights for the weak among us. She is strong, bold, and powerful. She is fearless and brave. All of these characters fight against crime and injustice wherever it may be.

Captain America is another favorite. He stands for liberty and freedom. He embodies courage, humility, perseverance, and dignity. If we could describe Captain America with one word it would be morality. He is righteous. He does what is right regardless of the consequences. I love his quote which says, "Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — "No, you move."

These are our cultural heroes. They are our heroes because they embody what our culture reveres: principles of morality, goodness, and truth. How can I be ashamed of the values of truth, justice, life, liberty, morality, and goodness? There are some who would argue that to have pride in America means to be racist or bigoted or supportive of slavery or imperialism. This is simply not true. People who argue in this vein would have us be ashamed because of the words or actions of a minority of citizens who behave or say things that the majority condemns. I will not apologize for or be held accountable for things I didn't do. I will do what's in my power to fight alongside anyone who points out wrongs or injustices. American values are values of morality. They're values of personal responsibility, accountability, and truth. I will not apologize for that.

I will not be ashamed of America or the values that she represents. It has often been repeated that "America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.” If America ceases to be great it is because we have abandoned the principles and values that we profess to revere.

Equality and Unity of America's people and regions were never based in sameness. The unity of the American people occurred because they agreed on basic principles regardless of ideological differences. They agreed that the paramount values they espoused were truth, justice, and equality. America was the land of opportunity, the home of the brave. This wasn't just propaganda. It was the declaration of values that the people believed in and have fought for ever since. In the past when the world was in crisis, America has always banded together as a people and as a nation. The values with which we have striven to form "a more perfect" union or society are good, just, and right. Truth matters. Morality matters. Ethics matter. Justice Matters.

America was united in the past because people were proud of what she stood for. They were proud of what her people valued. The values of some of the most inspirational and iconic characters of all time are the values that represent "the American Way." While many would have us believe that America has lost her soul, I see that passion for truth, justice, and equality burning bright in her citizens that stand united for the common cause of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all people. It is our duty as Americans, as citizens, to stand up for truth and fight against injustice wherever we see it. I will not apologize for this.

Though those who came before us did not establish a perfect system or country, they laid the foundation of a great system that we utilize to form a "more perfect union" by establishing justice, peace and tranquility. We work for a country and a system of government that ensures the rights of all it's people--Rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Is there a more worthy goal? Isn't that what we all want? I can't apologize for that.

I am committed to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all people. I am committed to liberty and justice for all. I am united with the Republicans who defend the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights. I am united with the Democrats who want truth, justice, and equality for all men. I am united with the peaceful protesters who advocate for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all. I uphold the Constitution of the United States. I uphold the right of people to exercise their 1st amendment rights. Standing up for what is right and defending those who are weak is the American Way. I stand against the tyranny of government and the tyranny of the mob. We must all stand against injustice and corruption wherever we see it. I am united with all people who champion truth, justice, and equality. If wanting to spread these values, championing the weak, and preserving the dignity and liberty of all people is imperialism, then I don't want to be right. I cannot apologize for being proud of the American Way, a heritage that though imperfect is built upon the values that I love. I am proud to be an American.
